Heads Up Madness – February 16th 2013

Today is the 2013 kickoff for Bradenton Motorsports Park’s heads Up Madness series. This afternoon at 1 PM there is an awards ceremony for the 2012 champions that includes a racer appreciation lunch cooked up by Nitrous Mike.

Look like Howard Spires is making the move to Ultra Street this year. His first run netted a 5.25.

NMCA Pro Street standout Jeff Lutz is here testing and will compete in Pro Mod today. During Friday's test session he ripped off a 5.93 @ well over 220 MPH.

This year the Heads Up Madness series will feature a 5.90 index bike class. It's been a few years since bikes were in the program with a Pro Street class at the former sister track Sunshine Dragstrip in Pinellas Park, Florida.

Another racer that has made the switch to Ultra Street from X275 is Walt Drakeford from Real Speed Racing. The shop runs several cars in various classes locally.

Q1 Results and Notes

Th sheets are in the gallery for round one, we are getting back under way after a short rain put a dampener on qualifying with Open Outlaw up next.

Jim Walter from Sarasota sits third in 5.50 Index with a 5.52 with this clean 57.

Troy Pirez put the infamous Camaro on top of the X275 class with a 4.701 @ 153.

Final Qualifying Results

We have a decent first showing for the 5.90 Index bikes. I spoke with Roy Hagadorn about the class and the consensus is the riders are happy for a little something different. The cool weather kept quite a few home today so look for this class to grow quickly from the nine bikes here today.

X275 is missing a few cars this week as manyh racers are saving parts and money for Lights Out IV coming next weekend at SGMP. That didn't stop Troy Pirez from resetting the 2013 X275 record though.

From left to right, Paul Klyzek from Induction Solutions, Troy Pirez Jr. and Troy Pirez Sr. Team Pirez has been making some changes to the car this year to pick up the pace and it's working out well as they have set a new ET class record in both of thier recent outings. Today a 1.13, 3.09, 4.695 @ 153.68 is the new bar. yes the killer Camaro is now sporting the dreaded bullhorns, knock 'em if you don't like them but they serve a real purpose. Congrats guys.

X275 has a new player with Don Lamana debuting his new car this weekend. Built in house at Pro Fab Performance Plus with a Proline Race Engines small block Ford and X275 legal Exlile 88 MM turbo and tuned by Jay Meagher at Real Street Performance. Trans is from CRT with a Pro Torque converter. The team is based in Port Richey, Florida. Don's third hit on th enew car was a nice 5.11 @ 141.

Jeff Lutz leads the Scotty's racing Engines Outlaw Pro Mod Field with a 3.93 @ 198 miles per hour.

Lightning Rods connecting rods is on eof the Open Outlaw class sponsors with $100 going to the winner. Bullfrog Performance has $100 gift card for low ET and FTI Converters is on board for $100 gift card for best reaction in eliminations.

Matt Gilmore heat the tires prior to his 3.994 @ 180 pass to earn top qualifier earlier today.

Matt Wirth qualified second in Open Outlaw with a 4.09 but is out after his second run due to what the Lil Pup Racing team thinks is a broken input shaft in the transmission.

Final Results

Numer one qualifier in 7.50 Index Mark Mullen earned the class win over Paul Vizzo who qualified second. Mullen was first out and Vizzo was .001 under index.

6.50 Index winner Troy Pirez Jr. is finding this a familiar place with another win here at Bradenton after qualifying number one. His .031 reaction time alowed him a good margin at the stripe and former event winner R.L. Hudson broke out trying to catch up.

5.50 Index Winner - Brian Amendoloro hails from Wellington, Florida with his 69 Nova. He qualified number one and met number four Dwaine Kessler in the final putting up a nice .016 light and taking the win.

5.90 Index Motorcycle Winner - Nick Bowling Jr. qualified number one and faced number seven man Bart Spivey in the final. Spivey was away first but allowed Bowling to get around him with a 5.909 to a 5.937.

Outlaw 632 Winner - Wayne King put his naturally aspirated Dart in the winner circle after qualifying fourth. His .022 light put him way out in front of Dave French in a big upset win for the slower car.

X275 Winner Troy Pirez Sr. had a great day setting a new class record with a 4.695 this afternoon and meeting up with number three qualifier Justin "Lil Country" Swanstrom who took the holeshot in the final. At the stripe it was the big block Camaro taking the win with a 4.712 @ 154 to Swanstrom's game 4.745 @ 147. This makes yet another double up win for Team Pirez.

X275 Runner Up - Justin Swanstrom now holds the small block X275 ET record with a 4.710 @ 149.52 MPH.

Aaron Gramer's win in Ultra Street makes it a triple today for the Fast Forward Race Engines shop. The number two qualifier met with number one Howard Spires and put a tree on him to stay out front earning the class win with a 5.22 @ 137.78 to Spires 5.20 @ 137.19.

Ultra Street Runner Up - Howard Spires was number one qualifier with a 5.15 today.

Limited Street Winner - Scott Husted only faced one car in Chris Tedeschi. His 4.78 @ 155 took the win after Tedeschi got loose and was forced to lift.

Open Outlaw Winner - Matt Gilmore ran the table in the class today and laid down a nice 3.91 @ 183 in the final over Craig Andrews.

Scotty's Racing Technology Outlaw Pro Mod split the purse after some down time caused the track to cool off this evening. Lutz was number one qualifier and ran a 4.13 @ 188 over Terry Duffy in round two for the technical advantage going into a final match.

Josh Green piloted the Team Green 55 Chevy to third qualifier and laid down a 4.18 @ 166 in the nitrous fed Pro Street Chevy over Fast Frank in round two after he got out of shape and had to lift. Both cars should be here next month for the NMCA kickoff event. Maybe they will get a chance to run this final in qualifying then.
